Know how your real estate taxes are calculated

(hometownannapolis)- In this time of good holiday cheer, we thought you’d enjoy a column about TAXES. We know that talking about taxes is like getting a lump of coal under your tree. But, for many of you in Anne Arundel County, you’ll be getting a special gift from the state at the end of the month - your new real estate assessment.

All homeowners pay real estate taxes. You pay real estate taxes to the state, the county, and if you live in Annapolis, you also get the privilege of paying real estate taxes to the city as well.

There are two components as to how the government figures out what you owe. The first is your assessment, which is what the state has determined is the fair market value of your property.
