(BLUE RIDGE NOW) - What’s so funny about real estate these days? Not much unless you go see Flat Rock Playhouse’s production of “Real Estate,” which opened Wednesday night.
Written by Canadian playwright Allana Harkin, the American premiere of the play is filled with laughter, romance and flashes of true-life drama.
“Real Estate” is a heartwarming comedy with an intriguing story about the complexities and ironies of selling real estate, relationships and love.
Joel Hopper, played by Playhouse veteran and resident funnyman Scott Treadway, is a mystery writer who is holed up in his parents’ remote home in the woods to write and escape life. Problem is, ever since his wife left him two years ago, he’s been suffering from writer’s block. With no money coming in thanks to his prolonged funk, Hopper must sell the family’s house in a week or risk foreclosure. His ailing father has not paid taxes on the house in 40 years and now the family owes $12,000 in back taxes.
